We stripped the laptop down and found that the fans were clogged with dust.  The battery had swollen and was pushing on the keyboard base causing the keyboard to not work properly.

After consulting the customer we cleaned the fans and replaced the battery. The fans then ran quietly and the keyboard was working again.
